UPLYME & LYME REGIS 113 (6pts) lost to SIDMOUTH II 233-8 (20pts) by 120 runs.

Set over two hundred to win for the second week running, Uplyme made a disastrous start to their innings in Devon League C Division East and never looked likely to overhaul the total, writes John Davis.

The first three batsmen were dismissed without scoring and, as wickets tumbled at regular intervals, only four players managed to get into double figures.

Earlier the visitors, put into bat, had made a tentative start but when Will Goodall and Anthony Griffiths came together the runs began to flow.

Goodall was out for 46 but then Griffiths was joined by Isaac Thomas and together the pair moved the score on rapidly towards 200. Griffiths finally fell for 71 while Thomas hit a quick-fire 60 off of 55 balls.

Uplyme lacked bowling depth again although did manage to pick up points by making in-roads into the tail end with Steve Batey claiming 3-34 off his nine overs and Lahiru Abeywickrama weighing in with two for 36.

When Uplyme replied few batters were comfortable against the pace attack of George Bower and Liam Dalton. From 3-3 they slumped to 22-5 before skipper Sam Farrow steadied the situation a little before departing for 22.

Near the close there was some resistance from Bruce Maltby and Nabi Temori, both 12, and last man Abeywickrama entertained with a breezy 22.

Bower and Dalton both finished with three wickets apiece while another feature of Sidmouth’s win was the side’s all-round fielding ability with wicket-keeper David Parker taking one particularly notable catch.

On Saturday Uplyme travel to Heathcoat II (1pm) and on Wednesday entertain Ottery St. Mary in the quarter-final of the Ivor Dewdney Corinthian Cup (6pm).
