In our latest delve into the archives of East Devon football, Dick Sturch remembers the goalkeeping heroics of Bernard Hiscox, who was the landlord of the Trout Inn (Millwey's local) where the idea of a football team at Millwey Rise was first formulated.
Bernard had previously played for Axminster FC but took on the role of 'keeper for Millwey in that first all-conquering season of 1957-58.
On the field, as in his pub, he was a huge personality and never flinched from saying what he thought was right or what was wrong, and few people ever argued with him.
As a full-back playing in front of him, I occasionally felt the lash of his tongue for a mistake but this always made his words of praise so much more inspiring. Happy memories of Bernard and all those from the golden years of local football, with more golden years to come.
