After some three days of closure due to heavy waterlogging at Axe Cliff Golf Club, it was good to get back to some normality over last weekend when we even had some sunshine, writes Dave Bruce.
On Saturday, we were able to have a Roll Up, which was won by Bill Dearling, beating Mike Cottam on countback. both with 37 Stableford points.
On Sunday, the Men’s Section competed in Round 7 of its Winter League competition and the winning pair was Paul Cordwell and Shane Brown with a very good result of 47 points but they were pushed all the way by Mike Chadwick and Tony Davis, who were second on countback. One point behind on 46, we had father and son team of John & Billy Gait.
The previous week, before all the rain, we held the annual Cush Trophy and Febtuary Medal, which saw some excellent playing with some five players under par. Matt Hall was Division 1 winner on nett 69, again only on countback from young Dan Taylor. Harvey Gibbons took 3rd spot with his 72.
Division 2 top players came in with some amazing scores. Steve Anning, playing his best round for some time, won with a nett 64. Paul Cordwell, continuing his fine form, was 2nd with his 66 and ever young Nigel Pritchard, who plays in both Men’s and Senior sections, came third with a well-earned 68. I'm assuming that the trophy must have been won by Steve.
Let’s hope the rain abates for a while so we can all get back to playing our favourite sport. We would be happy with a drought now that we have our own recently installed water bore hole, which will save us a lot of expense in looking after the Course for the future.
