Cyclocross races usually take place in Autumn and Winter months and consist of several laps of a short course consisting of grass, mud, steep banks, tight corners and obstacles requiring the rider to dismount and carry the bike.
A little bit of running up steps and hopping over barriers on each lap is the norm. Races are usually in the duration of 15 minutes for Under 8s, up to 1 hour for the Seniors.
The next South West Cyclocross League event nearby is at Escot on Sunday, December 3. Cyclocross is a great way to maintain Winter fitness and improve bike handling.
Races cover all age categories from under 8s to over 60s, it's a competitive but fun environment, a great way of getting into cycle racing.
If you want to try this you don't need a cyclocross bike, mountain bikes are allowed. For further info if you are interested in competing, go to SWCX.org
