Local bragging rights in the South West Peninsula League were shared out between the Hippos of Honiton and the Tigers of Axminster in a classic midweek fixture at Mountbatten Way.
Given their respective league positions, the draw was probably a better result for Honiton, who are looking to climb out of the bottom five, than fourth-placed Axminster, although the closeness of the game reflects how competitive the league has been this season.
Joel Jackson opened the scoring for the Hippos but they were pegged back by a Craig Veal equaliser six minutes before half-time, and the Tigers took control when Jamie Price found the net on the hour.
Honiton, however, have earned the title of ‘draw specialists’ over the first two months of the campaign, and they kept up the stalemate pattern with a composed penalty from Lewis Couch on 79 minutes to complete a top game played in front of a crowd of 156.
