Bobble, aka Robert Saunders, is no spring chicken at the tender age of 65, but he first appeared at an evening Axe Valley Pedallers ride around a dozen years ago on an old mountain bike and wearing a woolly jumper.
He took to cycling like a duck to water and has become one of the club’s highest mileage riders, knocking out 8,000 or more miles per annum. He's not a high mileage slouch either, his ability to spin a high cadence up an East Devon hill is remarkable and would put plenty of riders half his age to shame. In the height of summer, Bobble is often bagging 200 miles a week.
He retired from Seaton Co-op, last year so I wouldn't be surprised to see him achieve 10,000 miles. If you ever spot a lean and lanky cyclist with a woollen bobble sticking out of his helmet, that would be Bobble. He's taken a few tumbles over the years and had some nasty injures but has always bounced back to top form.
He's got to be the fittest pensioner in the Axe Valley. The secret to his success appears to be clean living and drinking milkshakes!
