Honiton Spinners John Burgess, Roger Saunders, Tony Peek and Steve Carpenter rode the Devon Coast to Coast route from Plymouth to Ilfracombe, with Mark Griffin providing refreshments and encouragement.
All they had to do was follow Sustrans Route 27 signs with a backup GPS on the Garmin and a map. What could possibly go wrong! A great deal, as it turned out, including following a trail that forced them to carry the bikes down steps.
From Yelverton, they eventually found signs to Tavistock, but they missed a well-hidden sign on the route and went up a long climb of two miles before deciding to return back down to Peter Tavy. They cycled over Brentor and down into Lydford, with yet more climbing before getting on to the Granite Way cycle route to Okehampton.
Finally, they joined the Tarka Trail, finishing at the Puffing Billy pub. The ride was 71 miles with plenty of climbs but beautiful scenery.
