Another season of motorsport has drawn to a close at Wiscombe Park, and that meant it was time for Wiscombe’s biggest social event of the year, the Awards Evening. Around 100 guests gathered at Wiscombe House to celebrate this year’s fastest drivers.
The first award of the evening was made by Rupert Barker, Finance Director, Torbay Motor Club, to Peter Isaac. This was the Spirit of the Event Award – the Gerry Pickard Memorial Shield - presented in recognition of the efforts of the Wiscombe marshals to keep the meeting running in atrocious weather conditions at the very wet Torbay MC Hillclimb in May.
The attention then turned to the Wiscombe Park Tillicoultry Quarries Championship. The top six drivers received awards. The final positions were: 1 Rod Eyles – Alfa Romeo 4C 91.40 pts; 2 Steve Wareham – Morris Mini 90.52 pts; 3 Jon Langmead – Lotus Elise 135R 89.10 pts; 4 John Simpson – Ford Escort Mk2 88.19 pts; 5 Ian Ingleheart – Westfield SE Cosworth 87.99 pts; 6 Rod Thorne – Pilbeam MP43 87.10 pts.
Rod Eyles, who has been competing in speed events for 40 years and won many awards in that time, including three British Sprint Championships, paid tribute to Steve Wareham whom he narrowly beat to the title by less than a point.
The Championship battle went to the very last event – it was far too close to call. Steve put Rod under a lot of pressure and gave spectators plenty of excitement with his, often sideways, always spectacular, style of driving in his 1970 Mini.
Dawlish Warren golf professional, Jon Langmead, finished the season in third place driving a Lotus Elise 135R.
Wiscombe is not just about cars, but also motorbikes. The Sir Nicholas Williamson Challenge Trophy was awarded to 10 times National Hill Climb Association Champion, Paul Jeffery from Barnstaple. During 2021, Paul competed in every Wiscombe meeting, achieving five Fastest Times of the Day and a number of second places riding his KTM.
