AXMINSTER hosted its first ever Oktoberfest event at Axminster Guildhall this October and it was so successful that it is now becoming a yearly tradition.

The evening itself was full of fun activities, including The Sherbavarian Stompers (a 9 piece Oompah Band from Sherbourne), Yodeling Competitions, Dance Competitions, Drinking Games, the "Ein ungewöhnliches Deutsch-Quiz" and the cast of Axminster Drama Club performing "Oompah-pah" from their December 2024 production of Oliver (tickets available from the Guildhall).

The evening was hosted by Axminster’s very own German Dame Brunehilda Von Tinkle (Richard Walters) who ensured that everyone got into the spirit - not that Brunehilda had to do too much, as everyone came ready for a good night out, with most of the audience donning lederhosen and appropriate German garb.

Manager Leigh Conley, who has “completely rejuvenated" the Guildhall in the three years he has been in charge, said: “It was just an absolutely fantastic night, and everybody had a great time, there was singing, dancing and drinking – lots and lots of drinking.

“Everyone that booked early received a free Hot Dog and a limited-edition Axminster Guildhall Oktoberfest Beer Stein, these steins allowed holders access to a litre of Beer at a special rate at the bar.”

As with any inaugural event, there was initial concern surrounding the event’s success, if people would come and if they would want to come again but all these questions were answered early the next morning by “a wash" of positive comments on social media.

Many participants of the event, most likely through a haze of fuzzy heads, praised the event with comments saying how they had a great time.

One of the online commenters said: "I came for the experience and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Seeing the costumes, jokes, quiz, a taste of the Oliver show, with a great band swaying left to right, standing up and sitting down, we loved it! Wundernacht!!!!"

Another commenter said: “Didn’t know what to expect, but I really enjoyed it! Great to see lots of people enjoying it and dressing up.

“It was a fantastic night. A big thank you to all who made it happen.”

Leigh said: “Based on this feedback, we will be back – watch this space.

“These events take an awful lot of work and organising, and the Guildhall couldn’t put these on without the help and support of our team of volunteers who work their absolute socks off making sure everyone has a great night, and I would like to say a massive thank you to all of them.”

The Axminster Guildhall still has several events left in 2024, including a Free Christmas Brass Band Contest, £1 Christmas Movie, Christmas Markets, The Krays and a Drag Show.
