A MAN from Weston-super-Mare has spoken about the moment he found a suspected unexploded bomb on Beer beach while on holiday with his family.

Adrian Bamford was on holiday and walking along the shoreline last Sunday (August 25) when his daughter “stumbled across the half-buried shell under the pebbles”.

The object washed ashore and was believed by some witnesses to be a shell.

Mr Bamford said: “My family and I are currently on holiday, and we went to the beach for the day.

“My wife, mother-in-law, two sons and my daughter were walking along the shoreline.

“My daughter then stumbled across the half-buried shell under the pebbles.

“She pointed it out, where my eldest son moved the pebbles out of the way where we recognised that it could've been a weapon.

“Unbeknownst to my son, he picked it up and dragged it away to see if it was real, or unused.

“He described it as incredibly heavy, and we googled what an old empty shell looks like. It wasn't empty and looked full to us.

“My youngest son came and got me where I phoned 999 and waited for further instructions.”

“The lady told to clear the beach with family and then the coastguard called me to explain the size of the shell.

“About five to 10 minutes later the coastguard came and closed the whole beach down.”

Devon and Cornwall Police said they received reports of a "suspected unexploded ordnance" at 4pm last Sunday and put a cordon in place, which has since been lifted.

It is understood the suspected device may have first been spotted by a metal detectorist and identified by a second person, who raised the alarm.
