When was the last time you wobbled home after a night out? And how many glasses does it take to make you wobble? I’ve accompanied a couple of wobblers in recent years, but being the responsible, sophisticated, and demure person I am, since son number one came into being, I haven’t wobbled in over twenty-five years, until now.
I went to a party earlier in the month, and to be fair, it’s been a while, so I dug out a dress I haven’t worn in years, avoided eating anything for twenty-four hours so my stomach didn’t look like I was still carrying son number one, and headed down the hill.
A few hours, and two glasses later, I was having to concentrate on each step heading back up the hill to home.
But if you can’t let your hair down in the sunny summer month of August, when everyone is in that costa-careless mood, when can you? And because everyone is off holidaying and having a jolly old time, that’s why we purposefully kept the Gateway Theatre programme light. It also meant we could crack on and sort out lots of behind-the-scenes stuff, and when you discover your finance person has an equal talent in IT, it’s an opportunity to give the theatre website an overhaul. By the time you read this, it will all be over bar the shouting. When you go online to check us out, you will see we’ve had a bit of a makeover to enrich your ‘visitor experience’ and make it all the more enjoyable. You’ll love it.
We held our first summer fair, which, as luck would have it, fell on one of the few warm, dry, semi-sunny days we’ve had this year; and another first was the anniversary of the community Tea & Chat run by fabulous volunteers, Mandy and Chris Saunders. It’s now become part of my weekly keep-fit routine; with the music belting out and no one watching, or listening, I can sing my heart out and do my thing whilst I put out the tables and chairs, and I can tell you, I know a few moves without putting my back out.
We hosted a funeral wake which was a first for me. When I told theatre tech and all-round superman, Paul, he said there has been one before that also had the coffin in situ. I’m now wondering if those knocks and bangs I keep hearing could be the spirits of those left behind, or maybe it’s a spirit of a different kind that is giving someone the wobbles.
