Honiton Carers were treated to a presentation on fall prevention by Lesley Blackmore of the RD&U Falls Prevention team.
The talk, which took place on Wednesday, August 14 at The Methodist Church, was described as fascinating and informative by the attending carers.
Ms Blackmore, a carer herself, presented her understanding of the hardships linked to caring for someone prone to falls.
She emphasised the crucial role carers, ex-carers and those aged 65 and above play in self-care.
Ms Blackmore highlighted the Devon Urgent Community Response Service (UCR), which responds to non-emergency fall situations within two hours.
For those over 18 requiring support within their homes, UCR is a crucial service that aids in reducing the demanding call load of ambulances for such incidents.
Ms Blackmore also introduced attendees to the Steady On Your Feet service, a resourceful website offering personalised advice after answering a handful of questions.
The website presents a comprehensive Fall Prevention Guide among other general advice and supports.
Furthermore, she demonstrated practical skills such as getting up safely after a fall and rising slowly from a seated position to prevent dizziness.
All attendants agreed that the presentation offered great value, being comprehensive and enjoyed by all.
Following the talk, chairman Winnie Cameron thanked Ms Blackmore and presented her with a pot plant on behalf of Stella Ford.
Volunteers served refreshments, followed by a raffle.
Honiton Carers will meet once more at The Kitchen at Combe Garden Centre on Wednesday, August 21, between 3.00 - 4.30pm.
Carers are invited for a meeting full of warmth, support and shared understanding garnered through peer interactions.
