A yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued by the Met Office due to expected weather conditions that may lead to some disruption.
According to the Met Office, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Thursday, with chances to delay and cancel some public services such as buses and trains.
If you live in an area that is regularly affected by flooding, then there are ways to prepare ahead of the poor weather conditions, with more information available on the Met Office website.
The heaviest showers for Thursday could result in 20–30mm within an hour, with 24-hour accumulations possibly reaching as much as 70-90mm where multiple showers affect the same location.
In March, England saw a record amount of rainfall in the year and a half leading up to last month.
According to figures from the Met Office, 1,695.9mm of rain fell from October 2022 to March 2024. The amount of rainfall in this 18-month period is recorded as being the highest amount of rain for any 18-month period since the Met Office started collecting data back in 1836.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out across parts of England and Wales on Thursday afternoon. Where the showers do occur, they could be torrential, with the additional hazards of lightning, hail, and gusty winds.
“The exact location of the showers is still uncertain, and some places will stay dry all day.”
