POLICE have warned the public to keep a "distance" if they spot a "large non-native snake" on the loose in the Honiton area.
Rural East Devon Police said in a statement: "Police have received a further report of a large non-native snake in the Northcote Hill area of Honiton on Tuesday 25 June.
"Police and officers from East Devon District Council attended but the snake was not found. The type of snake has not been identified.
"We are asking that people stay alert when in the area especially those walking their dogs and those who have outdoor pets. If anyone sees a large non-native snake, please call 999 and try to monitor its location from a distance.
"We are aware of a previous report of a non-native snake being found in the area. Without the right environment, non-native snakes are at risk and may not survive.
"We are continuing to appeal for any information in relation to this, please use the online reporting tool or 101 quoting occurrence 50240146418."
On June 20 the police force said it was called to another report of "a large snake, around 6ft long, being found on Northcote Hill, Honiton, at around 10.10am on Saturday 15 June."
It added: "The animal had an injury to its neck and was left in the care of a veterinary clinic.
"Sadly, the snake had to be put to sleep, due to the severity of the injury.
"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident."
