Sophie Moseley, Theatre Manager of Seaton Gateway writes for the Herald.
The Gateway Theatre stepped back in time on Saturday night, to mark the anniversary date of the D-Day Normandy Landings.
It was a full night of music, song, and drama, with the Three Counties Swing Band playing well known hits from the 1940s, the Liberty Sisters singing a medley of famous wartime songs, and the local Dad’s Army troupe who performed a sketch from the well-known TV drama.
The event was to mark the 80th anniversary of the historic D-Day Landings, and given the Gateway Theatre was where the GIs who were living in nearby airbases came to enjoy the regular dance nights during the Second World War, the Lindy Hoppers added plenty of great dance moves that soon had some of the audience up and dancing.
People turned up in the fashion of the time, including Biggles and the Land Army girls. The theatre was decked out with Union Flag bunting, and watching over everything, was a captain sitting in the corner with a copy of the top secret invasion plans.
Kevin Rye led his Dad’s Army troupe across the stage to perform a hilarious sketch, with all the well-known characters. They are also performing at the Beehive this week.
