Colyton and Colyford Memory Cafe holds musical morning

The theme of the morning was a singalong to the songs of Abba, as this month marks the 25th anniversary of the stage production of the Mamma Mia musical and the 50th of Abba’s Eurovision success with Waterloo.

The Memory Café holds monthly sessions in both Colyton and Colyford, and all its sessions strongly feature musical activity.

Sue Whitell, chair of Colyton & Colyford Memory Café, said: “Music is a marvellous medium for bringing joy and delight into the lives of people living with dementia. We have learned so much about how music and song can trigger memories and stimulate positive physical responses.”

Attendees at the taster session were entertained by Claire from ChiChi Encore, a group leading low-impact and seated dance exercises. She led seated routines to several musical numbers including one featuring sparkly bowler hats. There was also a variety of table quizzes and puzzles, a tombola and a raffle.

Sue said: “Our Memory Café’s rich range of resources was on display, together with photo albums of the many activities and events we have enjoyed as a group over recent years.

“his open event was well-attended and our volunteer team received many positive expressions of appreciation. Because our popularity and membership is constantly growing, we are always on the search for additional volunteers.”

The Memory Café sessions are on the second Wednesday of the month at the Reece Strawbridge Centre in Colyton, and the fourth Wednesday of the month at Colyford Memorial Hall; both from 2pm until 4pm.
