The former Shooridge Funeral in Parlour in Honiton's Silver Street could be turned into a home as it has failed to sell as a commercial premises.
The owners of the building have submitted a planning application this week to change the use of the building from commercial premises, (Class E) into a house, (Class C3).
As the application states: "In response to the considerations regarding the property's marketing, this application includes evidence that the building has not been successful in selling as a commercial unit.
"The property's town centre location, whilst not suitable for current commercial requirements does make it an ideal candidate for a sustainable residential use.
"The site was listed on the agent’s website To Let for a rental of £25,000 p.a.
"The agent also installed a board indicating the availability of the premises facing Silver Street and visible from the High Street.
"The marketing produced several viewings although bearing in mind the configuration of the premises it was becoming clear that the premises would not meet modern business needs.
"Several of the comments from parties that viewed were that there was too much office space, and that the warehouse was not accessible by anything more than a large van.
"There was also a general feeling that the property would be a burden to keep in repair bearing in mind it’s age and construction.
"The unit is on the market now but the agent has advised that they not hopeful of finding a suitable business tenant soon.
"The property's town centre location, whilst not suitable for current commercial requirements does make it an ideal candidate for a sustainable residential use."
Shooridge Funerals moved out of the site in July last year to move to a larger building on Heathpark Industrial Estate.
