A man from the Sidmouth area suffered life-threatening injuries in the road accident on the A30 on Wednesday (November 22).
His car was involved in a collision with a lorry near Monkton at around 6.15am.
The man, who is in his 50s, was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. The driver of the lorry, who is in his 40s and lives in Cornwall, was unhurt.
A stretch of the A30 between Honiton and Upottery was closed in both directions until late afternoon for accident investigation and the removal of debris. Devon and Cornwall Police's Roads Policing Team have thanked the public for their patience while the road was closed.
Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage as they continue investigating the circumstances of the accident.
