It was a very good week for Axe Cliff Golf Club as they went up against neighbours Honiton. The Seniors won their home match against Honiton Seniors 4-2.

While the Mens section also beat a strong team from Honiton 4-1, winning three matches and drawing the other two in their opening match in the East Devon League at Exeter Golf & Country Club.

Seniors captain Richard Gibbons and Mens captain, retired postie Paul Clode, were over the moon with their team's success.

Looking forward to his 86 birthday on the club's next Boxing Day, young Gilbert Cox showed his class by winning the annual Seniors Charity Bowl with a fine 34 points.

He was matched by Andy Bailey, but Andy is still a mere 60 years old whereby you need to be, at least 65, to win this excellent trophy.

Low handicapper and fine golfer Tony Strong won Division 1 of the May Medal with his nett 71 from Mike Chadwick who scored 72.

A little bird told me that Mike has recently taken over the vacancy of our vice captain and we wish him well.

Mark Wisby and I enjoyed playing with relatively new member Chalky White for the first time last Friday in the Lavarack Stick.

None of us won but we found Chalky knew several of my old bank customers in Devizes where I retired in 1995 as manager.

His wife also worked for Lloyds Bank in Devizes but joined a little after I retired.

Chalky still has his successful garage business near Devizes but moved with his young wife and two children to Seaton some two years ago.

His children go to Beer Primary School and love it.

He also knew some of Mark's old contacts that he had in Swindon - it's a small world and it just shows that golfers do have time to chat whilst playing their games.
