A kitchen storage unit at the Golden House in South Street Axminster has been left 100 per cent damaged following a fire on Tuesday (May 14).

Fire crews from Axminster, Colyton, Charmouth and an aerial ladder from Yeovil have been fighting a large kitchen fire in Axminster on May 14.

Fire control received multiple reports of a fire at a retail premises on the Lyme Road/South Street junction at around 3pm.

Crews first on scene set to work fighting the fire with two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and a 45mm attack jet. 

One outbuilding attached to the Golden House was 'well alight.' Crews also evacuated the surrounding properties due to the large amount of smoke the fire was producing.

An aerial ladder from Yeovil was also dispatched but was stood down by the incident commander as it was no longer required at the incident.

At around 5pm, crews confirmed they were making steady progress and were in the process of removing the tiles from the roof to expose any unidentified Fire spread.

The fire was extinguished by crews at around 5.10pm. The fire involved a commercial kitchen outbuilding storage area which was 100% damaged by fire with 20% smoke damage affecting the nearby houses and businesses.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "We extinguished the fire using, four breathing apparatus, three Hose Reel Jets, one, 45mm Attack Jet, one Triple Extension Ladder and one Thermal Imaging Camera, all residents that had evacuated have all returned to their premises, the fire is believed to have been accidental.

"Our crews will conduct a revisit at 8pm this evening to inspect the premises and to damp down any remaining hotspots if required."
